Flax seeds come in two basic varieties, brown seed and yellow (or golden) seed. Most types having similar nutritional values and equal amounts of short-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

 

The nutty flavor of flax seeds combined with an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids makes them an increasingly popular addition to the diets of many a health conscious consumer.

 

Flax seeds are slightly larger than sesame seeds and have a hard shell that is smooth and shiny. Their color ranges from deep amber to reddish brown depending upon whether the flax is of the golden or brown variety. 

Ground flax seed provides more nutritional benefits than does whole seed. Grinding flax seeds breaks them up, making them easier to digest when eaten.

 

Flax seeds are used abundantly in the pet food, feed and food industries. It is used in bakery goods like bagels, buns, breads, pizza dough, pasta’s, salad toppings, health bars, crackers, cookies, drink mixes and other snack foods.

 

Flax is available in the following forms:

Whole flax seeds golden / yellow or brown: This product has not had any further processing outside of cleaning of the grain.

Milled flax seeds golden/ yellow or brown: This product is available in 14, 20 and 30 mesh sizing depending on its use. Cold milling process stabilizes the milled flax seed. This allows for a much longer shelf life.
